WOW!! Is it really nearing the end of March already? Tomorrow marks the first day of Spring or the March Equinox (varying from the 19th – 21st of March) days are approximately 12 hours long with day length increasing as the season progresses. Spring and “springtime” refer to the season, and also to ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renal, resurrection and regrowth. Spring lasts from mid March through mid June – these dates are known in the Northern Hemisphere. Spring is based on meteorological definitions of average temperatures on a monthly basis. In other parts of the world and hemisphere, Spring takes place during other times during the calendar year. According to the traditional Chinese calendar or the Celtic tradition – Spring takes place in early February roughly through the beginning of May. Their definition of Spring is solely based on daylight and the strength of the noon sun. There are several other traditional start and end dates of the Spring season – again depending on where you live on planet Earth!
Not only is springtime based on traditional calendars it also has ecological reckoning, naturally occurring and cultural events! The pnenological or ecological definition of spring relates to biological indicators; the blossoming of a range of plants species or the activities of animals – ecologist actually divide the year into 6 seasons that have no fixed dates!
Natural events such as the axis of the Earth is increasing it’s tilt relative to the sun producing longer days – causing the associated hemisphere to increase in temperature creating new plant growth to “spring forth” giving the season its name. Other natural events occurring during this season known as the El Nino effect and the Southern Oscillation Index – are indications of rainfall created by ocean currents and ocean temperatures – again, all taking place during this season.
Now that you’ve had a mini lesson on why Spring is Spring – get outside and enjoy the fresh air!
